Where Do Almond Trees Grow?

Where Do Almond Trees grow

Agroclimatic Condition for Almond Farming

Almonds are being grown, almost each and every corner of the world. However, growing an almond tree in suitable climate conditions and weather plays an important role in the fruit production. For the optimum growth rate, an almond tree plant requires moderate hot atmosphere having temp ranging between 28¬†¬įC to 38¬†¬įC and a cool winter for good filling of the kernel. Unopened blossoms of this crop are able to¬†resist cold up to ¬†‚Äď 2.0¬†¬įC, but petal fall stage blossoms can be easily get damaged by a temp. 0¬†¬įC and below temp.

This crop is able to resist temp. below – 2¬†¬įC for a short time period but if the conditions continue for a longer time, there are chances of crop damage and ower fruit production. This fruit crop can cultivated above 1,000 meter to 3,500 meter above¬†m.s.l. However, they grow their best in the warm and dry climate condition with mild and wet winter. The ideal temp. for growing almond is¬†18 ¬įC and 35 ¬įC with about 500 chilling hours at the time of buds formation.

Note: Avoid plantation in very cold areas where frost conditions take place frequently since these fruit trees are very sensitive to the frost conditions.

Almond Tree | Soil Requirement

The almond trees plants are able to grow on the large variety of soil having the soil pH, ranging from 6.8 to 8.5. However, growing almonds on deep and loamy soil having well drainage facility is considered as the best suitable for optimum fruit production. However, these fruit trees are not able to grow well on the heavy and poorly drained soil having water lodging problems.

For commercial almond cultivation, the ideal soil pH is 6.8 to 8.5 for producing quality and quantity production of nuts.

How to Plant Almond Tree?

Method of Propagation

This fruit crop is mostly propagated through the means of vegetative propagation or through the means of seeds. For propagating almond with the help of seeds, seeds should be sown directly to the field in well-prepared beds.

However, at the time of seed sowing, nuts should be laminated well for the better germination of seeds. One can also use peach as a rootstock for the propagation. But, the tree plants, grown through the means of rootstock plantation are not able to survive for a longer time. The seedling of almonds having some thickness as pencil thickness should be budded at around 10 cm above from the base of plants with suitable shield budding method for the better plant growth.

Land Preparation in The Almond Farming

A good land preparation definitely yields higher fruits in the cultivation. Also, the cultivating soil should have fine tilth form and is free from the weed and other materials. For bringing soil in fine tilth form, around two to three normal plowing with the local tractor is sufficient enough followed by a couple of harrowing. To increase the soil fertility and productivity, about 25 tonnes of well rotten farmyard manure per hectare should be added at the time of last harrowing or plowing.

Also, level the soil well for the uniform growth of tree plants. And, any soil deficiency should be corrected at the time of land preparation only.

Plantation And Spacing in Almond farming

For Almond Plantation, the budded plants should be planted in a square or hexagonal system of plantation should be followed by keeping a distance of 6 meters apart from each other for normal plantation depending on the soil type and availability of irrigation. However, for planting with medium-high density system, the spacing should be 4.0 meter by 4.0 meter and for high-density plantation, the spacing should be 3.5 meters to 2.5 meters.

how to grow almonds

Before plantation, prepare pits having dimension 3 feet each should be dug up between September to October for planting in the month of Feb and March. Make use of bamboo sticks to provide support to protect them from heavy winds and can grow straight. Try to plant pollinizer cultivar in every third to fourth row so that at the time of blooming, the pollinizer can coincide well with the main varieties.

However, it is a good idea to place about 8 to 10 honey bee hives for good pollination at the time of flowering stage.

Pollination in Almond farming

Friends, these fruit trees are not self-pollinating so there is a need of artificial pollination in the cultivation. So, cultivate with 33 % pollinizer plantation so that bloom can coincide with each other well. For commercial cultivation of almonds, Waris, Jordan alo IXL, and Ne-Plus-Ultra are generally used as the pollinizer.

How to Plant Almond Tree

However, placing about 8 to 10 honey bee hives are found to be highly beneficial. This also increases the fruiting and production to about more than 10 %.

Frost Management in Almond Farming

Due to early buddings in the plants, especially during the new blossoms, frost conditions may lead to the total destruction of the crop. This may lead to lower down the nut production, and even complete loss of bloom. So, the crop should provide protection from the seasonal and unexpected frost conditions.

For providing protection from frost, using Super-net micro-sprinklers to every tree plant is the best way at an irrigation rate 4 mm per hour.

Irrigation in Almond Farming

The requirement of irrigation in commercial almond farming is an important task that plays an important role in nut production and varies, depending on climate and soil type, used for cultivation. However, water to be supply on the basis of plant need.

Irrigating with the drip irrigation system is the best way of irrigation for maximum utilization of water. However, excess water from the plant base should be drained out, especially in the case of heavy rains and floods because this fruit plants are very sensitive to the water-stagnation.

drip irrigation in almond farming

For following drip irrigation, accommodate older plant with the common spacing of two laterals. Depending on the soil type and climate, young laterals should be planted. The ideal distance between the drippers is 50 cm and water discharge rate should be 2 to 2.5 liter per hour.

Application of Manure And Fertilizers in Almond Farming

Almonds trees plants are the heavy feeder. So, there is need of manure and fertilizers in good amount. Adding about 5 tonnes of farmyard manure per hectare are the time of land preparation is beneficial in increasing the soil fertility and productivity. Also, add about 20 kg of farmyard manure for the proper and better plant growth. Maximum nut production can be obtained with a good fertile soil. Go a single soil test before plantation so that the soil fertility and deficiency of any organic matter can be learned. The deficiency of any organic matter should be corrected by supplementing at the time of land preparation only.

However, provide manure and fertilizers on the basis of the soil test and leaf analysis of nutrients. Apply Nitrogen in about two to three equal doses. Give the first one with DAP and MOP, few days before the expected blooming. Provide the 2nd with Urea after about 20 to 25 days for good fruit setting. The 3rd one should be given with Urea, a couple of weeks later than the previous one.

Foliar spray of urea @ 2 % is found to be beneficial in promoting the fruit set, but formation and in the growth of other crucial stages such as flowering.

Harvesting Almonds

In the late July, the shell becomes starts splitting open and start color changes from green to yellow with slight cracks on the shell. In the late August, splits widens leave the shell exposed to allow the nut to become dry and become ready for market.

How to Harvest Almonds?

For harvesting almonds, there are many different ways but harvesting by tree shaking is adopted most by the growers. However, manual plucking of harvesting is also used by the growers. But, take care that fruiting branches do not harm during the harvesting by knocking with the bamboo sticks

How to Harvest Almonds

Let the collected almonds to become dry in a shady area for few days. Rain may damage the nuts quality during drying of the nuts. After that removed the hull through the manual means.

Post-Harvesting Care

There is need of hulling just after the harvesting carried out. Because it does not, then there are more chances of getting a fungal infection in the fruits. Dried out the nut with the help of sunlight or forced dried with hot air till the moisture content is not less than 10 %. For drying. polytunnels with the fan are considered as the best way.

Yield of Almond Farming

The yield of almond farming or cultivation depends on numbers of key points such as soil type, facility of irrigation, application of manure and other farm management skills, practiced during the cultivation.

However, averagely, one can easily obtain about more than 2 tonnes of nuts per hectare annually per year.
