This is based on experience in the tropics, and particularly Cameroon, and has an income generation and agroecological/landscape perspective in which the importance of diversity (social, economic, ecological and environmental) is stronger ( Leakey, 2012b, eLeakey, 2012bLeakey, 2012e ). We believe that this wider perspective is needed to illustrate interventions that can “tick the boxes” of some expected outputs and then formulate policies more relevant to smallholder agriculture in the tropics and to enhance investment in support of sustainable intensification.
